How to calculate your Personal Year 2027

The Personal Year is the number Pythagorean numerology gives each person for each calendar year. It runs from 1 to 9 and comes from a simple sum with your birth date. Use the calculator through the button on this page, or do the math by hand with the steps below.

The math takes less than a minute and doesn't need your birth year. On this page: the step-by-step method, three complete examples, the trickiest cases, what each number suggests, how to go from the year to the month and the day, and a little of the method's history.

Step by step

  • Reduce your birth day to a single digit by adding its digits: 15 becomes 1 + 5 = 6.
  • Reduce the month the same way: March is 3; October (10) becomes 1; December (12) becomes 3.
  • Add both results to the number of 2027, which is 2 (2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11, and 1 + 1 = 2).
  • If the sum goes past 9, add its digits again until one is left: 11 becomes 2, 15 becomes 6.
  • Adding every digit at once, as the calculator shows, gives the same result: 1 + 5 (day 15) + 3 (March) + 2 (2027) = 11, which reduces to 2.

Three complete examples

Someone born on March 15 adds 6 + 3 + 2 = 11, and 11 reduces to 2: their 2027 is a year 2. Someone born on October 23 reduces the day to 5 (2 + 3) and the month to 1 (1 + 0); 5 + 1 + 2 = 8, a year 8. The birth year never enters this math. A third case shows what the zero does: for October 30, the day becomes 3 + 0 = 3 and the month becomes 1 + 0 = 1, and 3 + 1 + 2 = 6, a year 6. A zero adds nothing and gets in nobody's way.

The trickiest cases

  • Zeros: the days 10, 20 and 30 become 1, 2 and 3, and October, the tenth month, becomes 1.
  • February 29: the date has a number too; adding everything, 2 + 9 + 2 + 2 = 15, and 1 + 5 = 6.
  • Sums that pass through 11 or 22: in the Personal Year, the math continues until a single digit is left, and the calculator shows a note when the sum passes through one of those numbers.
  • Order of the math: reducing the day and the month first or adding every digit at once always leads to the same final result.
  • Time zone and time of birth: they don't count. Only the month and day matter, as they appear on your birth certificate.

What each number suggests

Each result has its own page, with the meaning, the markers of the year and frequently asked questions. In a few words:

  • 1: beginnings, initiative and independence.
  • 2: partnerships, listening and patience.
  • 3: expression, creativity and good company.
  • 4: structure, routine and consistency.
  • 5: movement, curiosity and change.
  • 6: care, home and shared life.
  • 7: pause, study and reflection.
  • 8: leadership, decisions and achievement.
  • 9: completion, review and letting go.

When the year starts

At Astrilu, the Personal Year follows the calendar year: it starts on January 1 and runs through December 31, so everyone's months line up with the calendar. Some schools of numerology count from your birthday instead; under that convention, the months before your birthday still carry your 2026 number. Neither approach is the only one, and the calendar is the same for everyone, which makes months and dates easy to compare.

Personal month and personal day

The same logic goes down to the month and the day. Your personal month is your Personal Year plus the number of the month; your personal day is your personal month plus the day. In the 2027 guide, the days that come out as 1 appear as days to begin, and the ones that come out as 9 as days to wrap up: they're calendar markers, not promises of anything. An example: for a year 2, March is personal month 2 + 3 = 5, and March 10 is personal day 5 + 1 + 0 = 6.

Where Pythagorean numerology comes from

The name honors Pythagoras, who lived from about 570 to about 490 BCE, and the school that formed around him. The Pythagoreans gave numbers a central place in understanding the world: Aristotle, in the Metaphysics, reports that they took the principles of numbers to be the principles of all things, and Philolaus, a Pythagorean of the fifth century BCE, wrote that all things that are known have number. Modern numerology is far more recent: Underwood Dudley's book, published in 1997 by the Mathematical Association of America, says it was practically invented by L. Dow Balliett, of Atlantic City, New Jersey, around 1900. Astrilu uses the method as a theme for reflection and entertainment.

Do I need my birth year?

Not for the Personal Year: only the day and the month go into the math. Your birth year goes into a different number, the Life Path, which is used in the compatibility between two dates.

What if the sum is 11?

In the Personal Year, Astrilu always reduces down to a single digit from 1 to 9, so the 11 becomes 2. The master numbers 11, 22 and 33 show up in the Life Path, which is calculated with the full date.

Does the math change for people born in a leap year?

No. Only the day and the month matter. And a February 29 birthday has a number too: in 2027, it's the 6.

How do I find my personal year for 2026?

Use the 1 of 2026 (2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10, and 1 + 0 = 1) instead of the 2 of 2027. In practice, your 2026 number is one less than your 2027 number, and anyone in a 1 in 2027 lives a 9 in 2026.

And the personal year for 2028?

In 2028, the year adds up to 12, which reduces to 3, and each number goes up by one: anyone in a 9 in 2027 moves to a 1, and the cycle starts over.
